5-Step Summer Makeup Routine

5-Step Summer Makeup Routine

Oh my goodness. I don’t know about you, but it’s getting hot where I live! I started to sweat unloading the groceries from my trunk on Tuesday. No fun!

With all the heat, I simplify my summer makeup routine to reduce any face melting. You know what I’m talking about. Too much makeup starts to slide off my face the moment I walk outside. So here’s what I do to keep my skin healthy and fresh all day long:

Step 1: Moisturize

I know this step seems antithetical, but it’s not! Moisturizer helps balance out the pH levels and oils in your face. So adding a dab of moisturizer is a must! I’ve recently switch to a lotion for combination/oily skin and seen great results.

(Remember not to put moisturizer under your eyes. This thin skin will soak up the moisture and puff up, giving you more pronounced bags under your eyes. Yikes!)

Step 2: Protect

Sun is the number one damager of skin. So you need to protect it! I know a lot of moisturizers have built-in sunscreen, but they’re usually only 15 SPF. So I double up with this day solution which has 35 SPF.

Step 3: Conceal

This is a step I cannot skip. No matter how much I sleep or how much water I drink, I have pronounced bags under my eyes. For a lot of summer days out, this is all I do.

Here’s a tip for blending in your concealer: Dab three dots in a triangle on your skin, like I’ve done above, and blend with one of you last three fingers. Placing the color in a triangle makes the color blend naturally into your skin. And using one of the weaker fingers protects the thin skin under the eyes.

Step 4: Foundation (optional)

So most days, I skip this step. Foundation is the part that starts to slip and slide. When I want to class it up for church or for a date (which I was going out on that night!), I add a touch of powder foundation. Or, when I need some extra protection, I’ll dab on a little CC cream (or tinted moisturizer) that has 15 SPF. But I reserve this for days spent in the convertible or on the bleachers at the Indy 500 ;).

Step 5: Eyes

What I do depends on the day, but I almost always use eyeshadow and mascara. I love cream eyeshadow for the summer. I rub the tiniest amount on and it stays in place for the day. They’re becoming more popular and easier to find. On days that I dress it up, I add a little eyeliner on my upper lid. (Eyeliner on the bottom lids melt in the heat.) And voila!

I’m ready to go out!

I had so much fun taking the photos after finishing up my makeup. In fact, I think they may be my new headshot! So not only is my summer makeup routine simple, it’s also pretty… What do you think?

Do you change up your makeup routine for the summer? What steps do you add or subtract? I’d love to hear from you!

This is PERFECT for summer. I always go for an easier, lighter make up routine in the summer.

Mascara is a must for me, too! I love that Mary Kay daytime cream, too…something about the Timewise line is just so luxurious feeling, I think!

Their products are really great! The CC cream is my go-to for especially sunny days and I love their moisturizer. If you get a chance, you should try their cream eye shadow. I LOVE it!

Simple makeup routines are my sweet spot! Since I work from home, I don’t have any need for fussy routines and when it’s this hot out, they don’t stay on long anyway.

You have such a beautiful complexion! I can’t do the natural look. I always end up looking really tired, I have 3 kids under 6. I love it though, keep it up!

This is why concealer is an every day necessity! I have lots of sleep issues, so I know what tired feels and looks like (though not to your extent since I don’t have kids yet). Usually if I can brighten up the purple bags under my eyes, the rest of my face looks fine with little coverage.

Love your simple routine! Definitely perfect for beach or pool days since you don’t want too much makeup on then! Love this!

Exactly! And I’m definitely ready for some beach and pool days. We went out on the lake for Memorial Day. It was so much fun, but I was soooooo sore for the next two days. Lower impact sun and water sounds perfect to me 🙂

I always change my makeup routine in the summertime! Usually I’m outside a lot more and my skin gets very sweaty, very fast. Unless I have an event to go to I almost always skip foundation and just settle with my eye routine. But I will definitely keep moisturizer in my routine, now!

Same here! But yes, that moisturizer is a life saver. I find that the heat is making me break out less because I’m using it this year.

quick and easy! Thanks for the tutorial, I am not the best at knowing how much makeup I need.

It’s a really hard balance to find! I usually have a couple different… levels, I guess. It all depends on what I’m doing that day. Most days I just do a little concealer and eyes. When I’m doing something for business I’ll do what I call “the full face” which involves liquid foundation and powder. But that gets to be a lot for everyday wear. Quick and easy is the best way to go 🙂
