Everyone needs a little encouragement on their adventures. I want to lift you up and give you the courage to face any fear or obstacle.

How To Do A Lot With A Little Money

The day after my husband and I got married we moved to Mexico. My husband is from Mexico and was recalled there for work. I was only there on a visitor's visa, so I couldn't work and didn't know enough Spanish to have gotten a job even if I could. So for most of the first year we lived on one salary, and though it was a great salary by Mexico's standards, it was only about $1,400 a month. Even with our little salary, we had big dreams, so we quickly had to learn how to do a lot with a little money. And yet, it in that first year we were able to buy and spoil a puppy and [...]

Find Balance One Step at a Time

Ever since I have started this blog, I have had great difficulty in finding balance between work, life, and everything in between. I am currently balancing four jobs (only two of which pay), trying to keep the house from falling apart (feels like a losing battle), wanting to spend time with my lovely husband (who is also ridiculously busy), and needing to have a breath of free time... to not go crazy. How do I do it? I don't know. But I do know I haven't been doing it well. My house has been a mess for longer than I can remember. As a freelance writer, editor, and blogger, I find I'm always doing more of one or the other. As for [...]

The Liebster Award!

The Busy Life has been live for just under two months. During that time I've learned so much about blogging and the blogging community. But that doesn't even compare to how much I've learned about myself! Becoming a blogger has been an awesome, crazy, confusing journey and I can't wait to see what the future will bring. I am so humbled and honored to announce that The Busy Life has won it's first award--the Liebster Award! I want to thank Yannivlovely for this nomination.  WHAT IS THE NEWBIE BLOGGER LIEBSTER AWARD? The Newbie Blogging Liebster Award is an award given to new bloggers, usually for those who have less than 200 followers (I calculated this my looking at Bloglovin'), by other [...]

Pursue Christ Not Christianity

This past weekend I was at the American Christian Fiction Writer's conference in Dallas, Texas. I had such a blast getting to know the awesome men and women there. Being around others who share my heart's interest refreshed and recharged me. I truly encourage you to find some time this week to fellowship with someone (outside of your family) who gets you. You'll be amazed at the difference it makes. At a general assembly, the group was asked by Bill Myer (an amazing man of God, you should check out the crazy, awesome things he's done) what are the things you have to do when you're a Christian. Here's the answers that were given: Must: Go to church Pray Read [...]

3 Reasons to Not Let the Fear of Losing Win

The fear of losing can keep us from even trying in the first place. For me, this is never more evident than in friendships. I am naturally an introvert. Now, I love having people over, but I feel exhausted afterwards. In one particular church, I would venture out of my shell to connect with someone, and they would leave. It hurt a lot. And I did not like the feeling of loss. So I ventured out of my shell less and less. I let the fear of losing rule my friendships. When I first got to college, I hesitated to put myself out there and really put an effort into my friendships because I knew I would loose them all in four [...]

Focus on Now: Enjoy Each Moment

Can you believe it's September already? I can't! To me, it still feels as if we've just turned the new year. But I am determined not to let the rest of the year fly by. I'm going to focus on now and strive to enjoy each moment. It's far too easy to get caught up in the next thing and let life fly by. Right now in this sweltering hot weather, my instinct is to wish for time to pass and the days to cool. I want to pull out my awesome boots and my comfy sweaters. Yet in a few months time, I'll be wishing I could pull out my dresses again. So I am making a conscious effort when [...]

Bloom Where You’re Planted: From Surviving to Thriving

To put it nicely, I did not have a pleasant middle and high school experience. I was surviving, not thriving. I was bullied, I struggled to make friends, I had no idea who I was or who I wanted to be. I did know that I couldn't wait to get out of there. But my dad spoke four words of wisdom that I carry with me to this day: Bloom where you're planted. At many points in our lives we will be in circumstances that are less than favorable. And so often, there is little we can do to change those circumstances. So we can fight what we can't change, be angry and frustrated, or we can find a way [...]

It’s the Little Things that Weigh Me Down

I chose "It's the Little Things" as the tagline for my blog because for me it's the little things that make all the difference. I notice everything. And I feel everything which can be great on a good day. But on a bad day it can really weigh me down. Just two weeks ago I had two really bad days. My husband was out of town, all of my family went on vacation without me, I got my first two rejection letters, and my blog views had gone on a weeklong dive. So of course, on top of that I noticed that the house was too dirty and too quiet, the dog's nails were too long and were scratching me, [...]

Taking Strides with “Sole Hope” in Eastern Africa

The awesome ladies at the Sole Hope Cutting Party. Saturday night was a much needed girls' night. Over dinner and rocking ice cream sundaes we chatted and laughed... Man, I can't remember the last time I laughed that much. But after the last dish was put away we got out old jeans, permanent markers, and scissors and made shoe kits for Sole Hope, an international mission dedicated to getting shoes on the feet of children in Eastern Africa to combat a debilitating parasite. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-3UlkCGExw I cried watching this video. In fact, I'm crying again as I write this. It hurts to watch the jiggers being dug out of these children's feet and to hear their anguished sobs. Then [...]

Let God Dream for You

I rediscovered this song this morning and I just had to share. I know many of you are getting ready to start up school this month or maybe there's another situation where you don't exactly know how it's going to turn out. It can be scary. And I know my first instinct is to worry. But really, who does that help? You may or may not know that I am a writer. Well, this week I just sent out my last proposal to an agent... and I nearly started hyperventilating. The moment I hit send, it was out of my hands. And I didn't like that, because I like to be in control. Many of you will be facing similar [...]
