Here yea, here yea! All hail Empress Meg!
Oh, no wait. That was just a nice little dream I had. I’m awake now.
You may or may not remember, that as a part of my 25 goals for this year, I’m bent on edu-ma-cating myself. Right now, I’m taking a class called Instant Bestseller by Tim Grahl, who’s a pretty awesome, super smart dude. In addition to watching videos that make me go out and do stuff like start an amazing newsletter *cough, cough, Please sign up! cough, cough*, I sometimes have reading assignments. Which is how I came to discover Chris Guillebeau, The Art of Non-Conformity community, and A Brief Guide to World Domination. If you like tongue-in-cheek, motivational guides, you should check it out.
It really got me thinking about life goals. While my 25 goals are a great way to stretch myself, they don’t give me a direction in which I should be moving in my work and my life. Well, with Chris’s help, I’m going to start to rectify that.
Chris asks two main questions at the outset of this 29-page PDF:
- What do you really want to get out of life?
- What can you offer the world that no one else can?
I encourage you to pull out a piece of paper and pen right now, and answer them for yourself. I’m still working on my answers, but here’s what I’ve found so far:
What do I want out to life? To have adventures and share them through my novels. I love to write and I want to do it all day, every day. I want to share what I’ve written with people around the world, and somehow make their lives a little brighter. And I would like to make a living with my writing, enough that I can keep exploring and doing what I love.
What can I offer to the world? Well, this one’s a little harder. I have a unique voice and a unique perspective, which I lend to my writing. I love collecting and disseminating information on writing and publishing successfully. I’m crafty and I’ve made shoes for children in Africa and blankets for kids separated from their families in my own hometown.

How does that translate into a broader goal? I don’t know yet, but I’ve got at least one idea: A read-a-thon, in which people from all over can join, read good books, and raise money to build a clean-water well for kids in a developing country through World Vision–readers could get sponsors for the number of hours, pages, or books they could read. (And I’m telling you this so that I have some level of accountability, which I’ve found works wonders for me.)
I want to keep thinking and figure out how to expand that into my larger goal instead of just a one-time event, but at least it’s a place to start.
And that’s the most important thing: start. Start now. You may start wrong, but at least you’ll be learning. Don’t wait. Don’t wait until your kid starts school or finishes college. Don’t wait until the lawn is mowed and the garbage is out and the laundry is clean. Don’t wait for the perfect time. There is no perfect time. You will wait your life away.
I’m starting. I’m publishing my book and starting my newsletter and changing my site. I may not do it all right. In fact, I’m sure I’ve messed up some things all ready. But I’m going to keep learning and trying and improving. And I’m going to take on the world.
How can you do one thing today to move toward your goal and make the world a better place?
