I don’t know about you, but I need my hair up in this heat if I’m going to walk outside. However, throwing up my hair into a ponytail doesn’t do it for me because the humidity takes all my little frizzies and gives them the volume I can’t buy. So I want to let you in on my personal favorite and lifesaver hairstyle.
It takes all of two minutes and looks just as good with dirty hair as it does clean. All you need is a clip and a hair band.
I call it The Belle Ponytail after my favorite Disney princess. (Is anyone else excited that Emma Watson is playing Belle in the new live-action Beauty and the Beast?!)
Square 1: Slide your finger under your hair about an inch below the part and separate a strand of hair about an inch wide. Then twist the strand away from your face two or three times.
Square 2: Holding on to the strand with your left hand, slide your right pointer finger under another inch (or less) of hair–holding the twisted strand towards the back of your head and the new strand nearest to your face. Feed this strand over the top of the twist and add it to existing strand. Twist all the hair now in your hand away from your face.
Square 3-4: Continue repeating this step, each time making the strand of hair a bit wider so that the twisted ridge you’re creating angles backwards and down from your part. Smooth out the hair as you’re adding it in to avoid any bumps. There’s no need to straighten your hair (just one more reason I love this style), just comb it down with your fingers while adding in each strand.
Special: For the half-up-half-down version that I love during the cooler months, stop adding hair once you reach above and behind the ear, pull the twisted strand behind your head and bobby pin in place. Repeat on the other side. For the fully up version, continue reading.
Square 5: Continue angling down and back until you reach the center of the back of your head. Once there, clip the hair down to keep it in place. Then repeat on the other side!
Square 6-8: After completing the twist on both sides, remove the clip, gather both sides in one hand, and use your hair band to create a ponytail.
Most of the time, I just leave it as is… because it’s super cute! But from there, the variations are endless. Doing a topsy-turvy ponytail (you 90s babies will know what I’m talking about) at the end will complete the Belle in the blue dress look.
Now, just so that you’re warned, the first time I tried this, it took me 10-15 minutes to get it right. But now I can do it in about 3 minutes… without a mirror. It’s super easy once you get the hang of it. And it’s my favorite because it looks very classy and tucks away all my crazy frizzies so they can’t escape.
