A Frightening First Date

When I went on my frightening first date with my now-husband, I spent hours trying on outfits and testing them out with friends. I wanted my look to say just the right thing and I was so nervous I couldn’t stop second guessing myself. I finally settled on a rose-print lace top, dark skinny jeans, and my killer black leather boots. I tried to pin on a little confidence, but it just didn’t want to stick.

A Frightening First Date

My knight in shining armor only a month later in the scarf I made him.

I entered the coffee shop and found him right away. He was wearing a white knit sweater and a scarf. A scarf! How many guys can pull off a fashion scarf in Indiana? Not enough, in my opinion. His hair was perfect and those dark chocolate eyes locked right on me. Then he said the most terrifying thing possible. “Don’t tell me anything about yourself. Let’s give each other five clues and we’ll guess.”

What in the world?!

I did not want to guess. More accurately, I did not want to guess wrong. This proposed game opened me up to a lot of embarrassment and it was waaaaaaay too early to be embarrassed. However, I felt it would also say the wrong thing about me if I didn’t go along with his plan, so I gave him specific clues like “love crocheting” and “moved from Indiana to Ohio and back.”

He gave me “friends,” “cars,” “Mexico,” and “Sweden.” Yikes.

Needless to say, I did not do well on the whole guessing thing. But I managed not to say anything offensive, and that’s really the only good thing I can say. He did a fantastic job guessing about me. Just to add a little salt to that wound.

A Frightening First Date

Revisiting the cafe in which we met for our first date.

He told me about himself–he speaks four languages and had been everywhere I wanted to go–and I became enthralled. Maybe even a little more than I wanted to be. (I had sworn off relationships after all.) And as his face lit up when he talked about his work and all the amazing things he was doing, I found my frightening first date wasn’t so frightening after all.

I left that night, knowing I had met someone special. I had no idea where our path would lead, but I did know I wanted to learn more about him… Though I preferred not to guess.

What about your first date story? It doesn’t have to be with the love of your life. I’ve found that so many nerves are poured into first dates that they’re almost always memorable, so tell us about yours!

Aw! Cute story! Hubby and I met for the first time at a local Starbucks! I can still remember what I wore that afternoon! 🙂

I know! It’s crazy the bits of information that stick in our heads.

What a sweet first date. My Hubbs and I didn’t date. We had known each other over five years, had become closer and closer friends and just decided that since we get along so well we should get married. Crazy but true. We have now been awesomely married for 17 years. Favorite date now would be doing nothing with each other.

How fun to relive these first few moments together! We met through a local outreach to an apartment in our then church. How time flies! Love the giveaway.

What a great first date story! On one of our dates (not our first), my husband and I re-introduced ourselves by saying what we would say if we were TOTALLY honest about ourselves. It was pretty hilarious. 😀

That is fantastic! I love it. I will definitely think about that for a fun date night idea 😀

Hey Megan! Loving reading your posts 🙂 A 1st date story – you had a positive experience getting to know a guy while salsa dancing. Mine however… When I first got to University of Illinois, my suburban pond had suddenly expanded to a whole pool of potential candidates. I was starstruck by this Argentinian grad student who kept trying to get me to come to apartment parties (major warning sign, in retrospect). When the student union had free salsa dancing lessons, I suggested we go. Not only was I a fish out of water, but this guy was in his element, gliding across the dance floor while I flopped helplessly along. Wasn’t what I imagined – but helped us both figure out we were not a match! 😛

Hi Ruth! Thanks for sharing! That’s a great story. And I know what you mean about being a fish out of water. I definitely didn’t know what I was doing the first time I salsa danced, but the right guy will be a good lead 🙂

What a cute story, and your adoration for him even now shows in your writing.

Haha! Me too. On my very first date, the guy tripped over a chair and fell.

We love dinner and a movie! and if we go early enough it’s almost always followed by a trip to the coffee shop or bookstore. 🙂 I love the Mr. for these dates. They are a gift indeed

That’s fantastic! I usually have to bribe my husband with a trip to a GM car lot to get him to go to a bookstore. Coffee, though, he’s always up for. I hope you can enjoy one of these lovely date nights soon!

I love going to the cinema. It’s now our most common date night 🙂
