Refresh Your Room with a DIY Banner

Refresh Your Room with a DIY Banner - The Busy Life

I had extra fabric after last week’s awesome push-pin board and I wanted to use it to tie in the colors to another point in the room. But how…

This is all a part of my campaign to beautify and organize my office. Right now, it’s mainly used to store gifts, craft odds and ends, and other things that don’t have a place to call home. It’s a mess. And that’s putting it kindly.  It will have to be tackled in the coming weeks.

But I’ve decided I need something to refresh the space and make me want to go in there in the first place. And this DIY welcoming banner above the door should do just the trick… At least, it will take away my last excuse not to go in there.

To begin, you’ll need fabric, scissors, and string. I chose two fabrics because, well, that’s all I got. As for the string, you’ll need to measure the length of the space you’d like to hang the banner over, then add a couple inches to be able to tie it off and a couple more depending on how much you would like the banner to dip in the middle.

Cut your fabric into strips. I made mine about 1 1/2″ which worked fairly well. If they’re too fat, it will make the next step difficult. I folded the fabric several times to make the cutting go faster. And don’t worry if they’re not in straight lines, that is not a requirement for this project (thankfully!). Then I cut the strips to my desired length. I was hanging this over a door, so I didn’t want them to be too long. For me, the perfect length was when I folded the 44″ strips into thirds and cut at each fold.

I folded a strip in half and laid the string on top. Then I pulled the two ends of the strip over the string and through the loop. I pulled tight and voila! It’s that simple!

I played with the pattern to find one just right for me. I had a lot more brown fabric, so I went with a two brown, one triangle, one brown, one triangle pattern. This used up a but more brown but didn’t overpower my awesome multicolored triangles.

I tied on all my little strips while watching Girl Meets World. I’m loving it! And now I’ve got a banner I love that ties my room together. I’d call that a successful evening.

Where would you hang a DIY banner like this? What colors would you use to refresh your room? Got any other beautification or organization tips for this office makeover?

I wonder how well this would work out as a wreath. I’ve been trying to find a DIY my kids can do for the porch. I might have to try it! Great instructions.

Thanks Liz Jo! I used the leftover fabric from the push-pin board. Each of item is in opposite corners so that it ties the room together 🙂

I love this idea. I’ve seen one with Tissue paper but just for parties.

    • Megan Gonzalez October 1, 2015 at 8:32 pm - Reply

Thanks Alanna! That could be fun with tissue paper, but I think it might rip too easily. These would be great for parties too. Even better, you can put it in a box and use it again next year 🙂
