Taking Strides with “Sole Hope” in Eastern Africa

The awesome ladies at the Sole Hope Cutting Party.

Saturday night was a much needed girls’ night. Over dinner and rocking ice cream sundaes we chatted and laughed… Man, I can’t remember the last time I laughed that much. But after the last dish was put away we got out old jeans, permanent markers, and scissors and made shoe kits for Sole Hope, an international mission dedicated to getting shoes on the feet of children in Eastern Africa to combat a debilitating parasite.

I cried watching this video. In fact, I’m crying again as I write this. It hurts to watch the jiggers being dug out of these children’s feet and to hear their anguished sobs. Then I see how easy it is to make a difference, and I think, how can I not help?

Who reading this has an old pair of jeans they don’t wear? I know I do. That pair of jeans can make a pair of shoes for one child in Africa, maybe even two. Your pair of jeans can prevent bugs from burrowing into a child’s feet and laying eggs until he or she can no longer walk.

I don’t know about you, but when I realize that’s at stake, I see a Goodwill trip in my future. It’s the little things that make all the difference. Cutting out the patterns takes nothing but time. Or you can sponsor a shoe for only $10. This pays for the material for the soles and helps create a job in Africa so that a deserving person can support his or her family.

Hi Megan! I’m so glad we were able to catch up a the Shoe party! I’m up for making more kits, but that last party depleted my denim supply. I am still happy to help if I can, so let me know when it is.

By the way, thank you for writing. You have a wonderful style!

Thanks Elise! I had so much fun with everyone. Don’t worry about bringing more denim, we’ve got leftovers and I can always take a trip to Goodwill 🙂
